In this paper we present the results of preliminary analysis of the use of Basis Peak smartwatch for longitudinal health monitoring during a 4 month period. Physiological measurements during sleep are validated using Zephyr Bioharness 3 monitor and SOMNOscreen+ polysomnographic monitoring system from SOMNOmedics. Average duration of sequences with no missed data was 49.9 minutes, with maximum length of 17 hours, and they represent 88.88\% of recording time. Average duration of the charging event was 221.9 min, and average time between charges was 54 hours, with maximum duration of the charging event of 16.3 hours. Preliminary results indicate that the physiological monitoring performance of existing smartwatches provides sufficient performance for longitudinal monitoring of health status and analysis of health and wellness trends.",

	abstract = "The overlap of transmission ranges between wireless networks as a result of mobility is referred to as dynamic coexistence. The interference caused by coexistence may significantly affect the performance of wireless body area networks (WBANs) where reliability is particularly critical for health monitoring applications. In this paper, we analytically study the effects of dynamic coexistence on the operation of IEEE 802.15.4-based health monitoring WBANs. The current IEEE 802.15.4 standard lacks mechanisms for effectively managing the coexistence of mobile WBANs. Considering the specific characteristics and requirements of health monitoring WBANs, we propose the dynamic coexistence management (DCM) mechanism to make IEEE 802.15.4-based WBANs able to detect and mitigate the harmful effects of coexistence. We assess the effectiveness of this scheme using extensive OPNET simulations. Our results indicate that DCM improves the successful transmission rates of dynamically coexisting WBANs by 20\%-25\% for typical medical monitoring applications.",

	abstract = "Long-term exposure to stress has been associated with chronic diseases, depression, and immune disorders. The precise detection and assessment of stress depends on personalized physiological monitoring and assessment of influence of personal and workplace factors We monitored nursing students during training on a high fidelity simulator in the Real-time Physiological Monitoring Lab at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. In this paper we present the preliminary results of this pilot study. A total of 14 participants were recorded: 12 female and 2 male subjects, 23-46 years old with an average age of 32.8 years. We analyzed heart rate, Heart Rate Variability ({HRV)}, respiration, and physical activity. The results indicate significant strain on subjects during simulation: heart rate increased 16.7\%, from 82.8 to 96.6 bpm (p lt;;0.001), falling to a slightly increased level after the training session (84.9 bpm); Root Mean Square of Successive {RR} Differences ({RMSSD)} decreased from 38.9 ms to 37.7 ms; the breathing rate increased during the simulation from 16.9 to 17.7 breaths/min. Distractions also significantly influenced physiological parameters: the first telephone call increased heart rate on average 9 bpm (p lt;;0.001), while the second call increased heart rate 8.6 bpm (p lt;;0.001). The simulated patient-related events created even more prominent response; the average heart rate increased 17.4 bpm (p lt;;0.001) at the onset of {\#x201C;patient} in crisis {\#x201D;} event. Real-time wearable monitoring may provide assessment of occupational stress.",

In order to integrate information from intelligent sensors, all devices must be connected to a Personal Area Network ({PAN).} This system organization is unsuitable for longer and continuous monitoring, particularly during the normal activity. For instance, monitoring of athletes and computer assisted rehabilitation commonly involve unwieldy wires to arms and legs that restrain normal activity. We propose a wireless {PAN} of intelligent sensors as a system architecture of choice, and present a new design of wireless personal area network with physiological sensors for medical applications. Intelligent wireless sensors perform data acquisition and limited processing. Individual sensors monitor specific physiological signals (such as {EEG}, {ECG}, {GSR}, etc.) and communicate with each other and the personal server. Personal server integrates information from different sensors and communicates with the rest of telemedical system as a standard mobile unit. We present our prototype implementation of Wireless Intelligent {SEnsor} ({WISE)} based on a very low power consumption microcontroller and a {DSP-based} personal server. In future we expect all components of {WISE} integrated in a single chip for use in a variety of new medical applications and sophisticated human computer interfaces. Existing growth of wireless infrastructure will allow a range of new telemedical applications that will significantly improve the quality of health care.",
